Attending the Noto Earthquake Report Meeting on 30 May 2025 was an enlightening experience for me. The presentations provided a comprehensive overview of the damage patterns, seismic behavior, and recovery challenges of the Noto Earthquake 2024.
Particularly during this meeting, Prof. Hara and the team presented the field investigation results, which provide insights into the mechanisms of failures, liquefaction, and infrastructure collapse in the affected region.
I am impressed by the multidisciplinary approach taken by the reporting and surveying teams. Engineers, seismologists, urban planners, and local government representatives collaborated closely, demonstrating the importance of integrated disaster response and research.
As a researcher, I renewed sense of purpose and several new ideas for collaborative studies, particularly resilient infrastructure design for rural areas. I was particularly impressed by the clarity of the data presented,
including seismic wave analyses, field survey results, and community response strategies. Professor Hara did an excellent job of bridging technical findings with broader societal implications,
which helped attendees from both academic and non-academic backgrounds engage meaningfully with the Earthquake disaster. I look forward to attending future sessions and hope to learn more about interdisciplinary cooperation
for disaster response and community resilience in disaster-prone areas. (D1 Mukesh Pathak)
On May 30th, Kochi University hosted an impressive and insightful workshop at the Media Hall, focusing on the onsite investigation of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, 2024.
This marked the third dissemination of findings from the site investigations. The workshop was led by Professor Hara, the team leader of the investigation group, who presented a comprehensive and technically detailed report
on the damage to infrastructure and the occurrence of landslides caused by the earthquake.
I had the opportunity to attend this session, as well as the first and second investigation workshops. Each has been an invaluable learning experience for me. The event drew significant attention,
with approximately 100 participants attending in person and many more joining online. Among the attendees were senior officials from Kochi Prefecture, members of the media, academics, experts, and members of the general public.
I understand that the workshop was also featured in a breaking news segment on the national broadcaster NHK, highlighting the importance and public interest surrounding the event.
The level of media coverage and public engagement reflects the significance of the investigation findings and the idea of Prof Hara.
I feel fortunate to have been able to attend this workshop and to gain firsthand insight into the technical aspects of the investigation and the broader impacts of the earthquake. I would like to express my sincere appreciation
to Professor Hara for his hard work and for delivering such a thorough and impactful presentation. (D3 Suresh, M2 Rachana)

Visit to a construction equipment manufacturing company[4/11](2025
On April 11, 2025, Prof. Harai led an inspiring field visit to Marutaka, a renowned Japanese machinery manufacturing company located in Kochi.
Under Hara Sensei’s guidance, we engaged in meaningful discussions with the company’s engineers and managers, gaining deeper insights into the practical applications of theoretical knowledge with real-world applications.
During this visit, I was exposed to the disaster mitigation machinery product. The experience not only enhanced my understanding of advanced machinery design and technology
but also highlighted the importance of precision, discipline, and innovation in manufacturing. Prof. Hara always emphasized the importance of such hands-on experiences
in bridging the gap between academic theories and real-world applications. This field visit significantly enriched my academic journey and offered us a glimpse into the practical side of engineering.(D1 Mukesh)
On Monday, April 11, 2025, our lab members—Hara-sensei, Mukesh, Maruyama, and I—visited the Kokubu River, located south of Kochi University School of Medicine in Nankoku City.
The visit was organized at the invitation of Mr. Hiroshige Takano from KOCHI MARUTAKA Company to attend a field demonstration of their newly developed excavation machine.
This machine is designed for disaster prevention and is capable of operating in diverse and challenging conditions, including snow-covered terrain, soft ground, boulder-filled areas,
and submerged environments requiring dredging. The site visit took place from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. The demonstration was particularly meaningful for us, as we have been engaged with the project since its early development phase.
KOCHI MARUTAKA has also expressed strong interest in launching this machine in Nepal, where it could serve a critical need.
Nepal, with its mountainous terrain and numerous rivers, faces significant challenges during the monsoon season. Annual floods carry large volumes of debris, reducing river capacity
and increasing the risk of inundation, especially in major cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhara. The floating, vertically adjustable nature of this machine makes it highly effective for clearing debris from rivers and lakes,
providing a promising solution for these issues. During the recent visit of the KOCHI MARUTAKA team to Nepal, there was notable interest from government stakeholders,
particularly the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation and Pokhara Metropolitan City. The Mayor of Pokhara has shown a strong willingness to procure the machine,
recognizing its potential to greatly enhance urban flood management efforts.
Given its applicability and effectiveness, I strongly recommend that KOCHI MARUTAKA develop a formal mechanism to introduce and launch this excavation machine in Nepal.
It represents a valuable tool for sustainable river management and disaster risk reduction in the region. Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Hara-sensei for organizing this insightful field trip
and connecting us with KOCHI MARUTAKA.(D3 Suresh)
