ビトリナイトとは石炭の一種です。植物の材を起原とし、石炭化の過程で水と酸素が抜け、炭素が相対的に富むようになります。この程度を石炭化度といいますが、ビトリナイトの反射率は石炭化度と比例します。
石炭化度はこれまで受けた熱エネルギーに比例しています。したがって、ビトリナイト反射率から温度の推定を行うことができます。石炭化は非可逆反応なので、推定された温度は過去の最高被熱を示します。

Vitrinite is a kind of carbonaceous material, originated from plants. In the processes that plants become coal, water and oxygen escape from the plants and the relative abundance of carbonaceous materials increases. The degree of coal rank is proportional to vitrinite reflectance. Because coal rank is proportional to thermal energy and the reaction is irreversible, we can estimate the maximum paleo-temperature of host sediments from vitrinite reflectance.
