変形組織から変形の向きや変形の仕方を推定し、変形史の中でどのようなステージでどのような変形をしているのかを明らかにします。堆積物ははじめは未固結な物質から出発し、沈み込みとともに脱水し、次第に岩石化してゆきます。この過程で物性が変化し、ことなる変形の仕方を記録します。 　やわらかい物の変形の仕方と固い物の変形の仕方が違うのは容易に想像できるでしょう。そして、地震を起こすためには固くなければならないような気がしますね。

Using structural geology, we estimate shear directions from deformation fabrics and understand the deformation stage in the history. Sediments start under unlithified condition and get to be lithified gradually with underthrusting by dewatering processes. Physical properties of sediments changes in the processes and deformation could also change. It is easy to imagine that the difference in deformation between soft and hard materials. You also imagine that earthquake needs hard rocks to be generated.
