    Research outline

Precious coral is an important fishery resource that supports the fishing industry and traditional industries in Kochi Prefecture, Japan. The growth rate of precious coral is extremely slow, hence appropriate its resource management is necessary to maintain the ecosystem and sustainable utilization of this resource. However, there is still lacking scientific data of precious coral for resource management. In this research project, we conduct basic research on the sustainable use of precious corals including surveys of resource abundance, ecological elucidation, and population structure analysis. In addition, we will work closely with local industry, government, and academia to develop a system for long-term fisheries management based on the scientific data obtained.

Research topics for the Ph.D. research (tentative)

Basic research on precious corals : For appropriate resource management, clarification of distribution patterns, abundance (resource volume), growth rate and lifespan of precious corals in fishing grounds, population structure analysis, etc.

Marine Core Analysis for the dynamics of the marine environment : Elucidation of paleoclimate and crustal movements over the past tens of thousands of years that have influenced the formation of precious coral resources, using "legacy” cores and academic cores.

Development and implementation of practical educational programs that explore issues in cooperation with local communities : Policy proposals based on discussions with industry representatives and government agencies including fishing regulations based on scientific data on precious corals (accumulation of scientific evidence and initiatives for social implementation based on it).
